How to Pin a Boutonniere

Whether you're dressing for a wedding, prom, or any special event, pinning a boutonniere can add a charming touch to your outfit. Here's a simple, step-by-step guide to make sure your boutonniere is securely and elegantly pinned.

Step 1: Choose the Placement

Typically, boutonnieres are worn on the left lapel of a suit or tuxedo (although, current trends are showing boutonnieres placed on either side, it is completely up to you!). The flower should be positioned just above the heart. If your jacket has a lapel buttonhole, that’s the perfect spot to aim for. Another thing to consider is the material that you are pinning a boutonniere to, we recommend placing it on a sturdier material, rather than a thin material that could be damaged from the pin.

Step 2: Position Your Non-Dominant Hand

Take your non-dominant hand and place it behind the lapel where you plan to pin the boutonniere. This will act as a support and protect your jacket from getting pierced.

Step 3: Create a Well for the Boutonniere

Creating a well in lapel

Using the pointer finger of your dominant hand, push gently against the front of the lapel. Simultaneously, have your non-dominant hand push against both sides of your dominant finger. This action should create a small well or pocket in which you can place your boutonniere.

Step 4: Place the Boutonniere in the Well

Carefully take your boutonniere and position it in the well you've created. Ensure that the flower is facing outward and is centered nicely on the lapel. Be mindful and don’t rush this, feel free to start over if you are not pleased with where the flowers are hitting on your garment.

Step 5: Flip the Lapel Over

Once you have the boutonniere in place, flip the lapel over so you have access to the back. This will help you secure the flowers without it shifting out of place.

Step 6: Secure the Boutonniere with a Pin

Take your pin and insert it from the back of the lapel. Push the pin through the thickest part of the flower stem and then back into the lapel fabric. This will keep the boutonniere snug against the lapel and ensure it stays in place throughout the event.

  • Add Extra Pins if Needed: If the boutonniere feels wobbly, don't hesitate to use an extra pin or two.
  • Be Gentle: Always handle the boutonniere with care to avoid crushing the delicate petals.
